![]() This painting was started at the beginning of 2006. The main idea was to develop the series (stealth bomber butterflies) using the flags as a wing structure from which everything else is connected. The background grey flag (Old Glories) acting as a second wing structure has the stars and white stripes missing. This is a passing of an old glory as the butterfly transforms into a new meaning through the front colored flag and the coming together of the 25 stars in each bomb shape cut-out in the left and right pillars. I wanted to join East and West not oppose them, therefore colors of other beliefs are introduced into the painting. There are also references to the great seal of The Islamic colors cutting along the bottom of the painting represent separation and the coming together of religious purpose; the original seven colors also stand for the seven prophets - Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus and Mohammed. The six colors I use to join and separate the elements of the painting added to the Islamic based colors (6 colors on top and 7 colors underneath to 13) and for some reason in our minds we have an unreasoned fear of the number 13. There are also set within the shapes either side of the colored face three lined squares in white, black and sandalwood representing the manifestation of divine power. God hides in his own radiance and sandalwood the colorless earth. The 2 landscapes in the center of the piece (the city skyline and in the distance the flat land) should be as one. Very few things should separate us from each other but we do put our conditioned perspective into play here. The moon cut-out is that which crosses the boundary between truth and reality. There are five moons in the painting; five is taken from the Roman numeral V which in turn is taken from a representation of an outstretched hand. There was no original intention to depict the 2 towers of 9/11 as a support structure for the flags. The first thought was to have 2 pillars supporting the wings and holding them in place before any further movement. But of course people will see references to the two towers and if so they are not in a destructive process, if I were to look at what popped into my head at that particular time (I did not think about 9/11 after they were painted in), only light and essence fills the space. For the bombs are not real only an invisible symbol, for with outlines nothing truly exists. There it is not one thing or another. The shape of the cut-out is made up of a circle, a square and 3 triangles, also if you put both tower structures together, the 25 stars in each would create a new world state. In the design of the painting there are many things going on with connecting areas developing into squares, triangles and intersecting lines. The viewer will have ideas of his own as to what he sees and what he does not for the artist's interpretation is not final. As the work progressed other ideas came in subconsciously. For instance there is a cross outlined in white which runs behind the cityscape against the gray stripes. In God We Trust (first adopted in 1956). Whilst working on the piece I was reminded about Thomas Jefferson and the journey of Lewis and Clarke to discover unknown One people - one world. | Return Home | Artist Biography | View Paintings | View Prints | View Hand Editions | Time Will Tell - detail | Pax Americana - details | View Apparel | Contact Us | |
